Queen Brian May

Description

This is my mix of probably one of the greatest bands of all time.
This is a song from all the albums written by the guitarist Brian May, up until a kind of magic as all were written by queen after that, some are even sang by Brian as well of my favourites by him, you may disagree with some of my choices.
One song would have been save me from the game but that is already on my heartbreak mix, one is sung in Japanese and one was also co-written as well.

Tracks

1. Keep yourself alive - Queen.

2. Some day one day - Queen 2.

3. Brighton rock - Sheer heart attack.

4. 39 - A night at the opera.

5. Teo torriate(let us cling together) - A day at the races.

6. It's late - News of the world.

7. Dreamers ball - Jazz.

8. Sail away sweet sister - The game.

American Football

Description

This is my mix off bands I have seen through going to see American football.
I was a Scottish Claymores season ticket holder which were is NFL Europe (world league of American football).
the first game I went to see was world bowl 96 23/06 (Frankfurt galaxy at Murray field) and the half time entertainment was gun who did do a version of cameos word up but the live version of better days is brilliant.
There was a lot of tribute bands they used to get on regular games so the next band was Doro Pesch (warlock) 10/06/00 (Rheine fire at Hampden)
Deacon Blue 21/04/01 (Frankfurt Galaxy at Hampden)
Bob Geldof   06/04/03 (Berlin Thunder at Hampden)
Lemar his best song is not that easy but that is on my heartbreak mix 18/05/03 (Rheine fire at Hampden)
The next three were all at world bowl xi which was played at Hampden 14/06/03 Frankfurt galaxy v Rhein fire, Sugababes, Mis-teeq and fish who did a version of Caledonia.
Girls Aloud 18/04/04 (Amsterdam admirals at Hampden)
Jamelia 02/05/04 (Rheine fire at Hampden)
Speedway my favourite song is always here which I have on my significant dates mix, they also do a great cover of genie in a bottle, they unfortunately have split up now, the lead singer has done solo songs and did a few songs for Mel c album, the drummer is now a collaborator with the ex roadie Paolo Nutini and the guitarist is the lead singer of The Feeling.

Songs that have a meaning to me

Description

To start with I remember the teachers strikes when I was at school think it was 1985 if I’m not mistaken where we used to go to registration, find our teacher was on strike then go home which is when I actually got into music, which all started with me acquiring my dad’s Freddie Mercury single and 'The Works' on tape, I eventually went out and bought my first single one hit wonder Stan Ridgway.

Now we have a couple of firsts, the first concert I went to see which was at the Mayfair Bruce Dickinson (bands seen mix) the first stage production at the dominion theatre London Grease which had the cast Craig Mclachlan, Debbie Gibson (her last day), Shane Richie and Tamzin Outhwaite, and my first karaoke song Bon Jovi.

During the early 1990s me and a mate became djs, we started off doing house parties and then we got a residency we did Butlers in the Newcastle on a Monday, which led to us getting Surfers Bar down in Tynemouth which was good for me as it was a rock club the only thing was I didn't finish till 22:00 the first night so didn't get there till late, there was 3 off us doing it at the time, when I got there nobody was dancing so my other 2 mates had to go for a meeting to talk about it and because I knew the music they left me in charge, when they came back i had Anthrax playing and the dance floor was full.

Because of the residency we got a few other gigs we did the music pre-game and half time for the North Shields Robins at Appleby Park, Tynemouth Beaconsfield with Alan Robson for bonfire night and the official opening of the Royal Quays with Lee Finan, PJ & Duncan where they perform 2 songs including let’s get ready to rumble.

One of the dj which did surfers for a while with us was Michael Whitaker who I roadied for at the time he did some great songs including hot summer nights but unfortunately this was never released, I also roadied for Lindisfarne for 1 gig which was when the tall ships left the Tyne and they played at Tynemouth, I also saw a lot of local bands around this time Candleman Summer, Tim Jones and Mccallum his left handed album is the best one he did but it is difficult to acquire.

Unfortunately my mam died in January 2000 but I always remember her talking about how she saw Billy Fury and he touched her glove, this song was also played at her funeral.
In February 2004 I met the love of my life who would later go on to break my heart (heartbreak mix) and while we were talking I mentioned how t-Rex were no 1 when I was born (significant dates mix) she wanted to know what was her song which was Louis Armstrong when she came up to mine we watched a documentary on The Kinks where she told me what Lola was all about, she also sent me a text which said roses are red, violets are blue, your my Geordie boy, and I adore you, the only thing that came to mind at the time was the lyrics to The Proclaimers song when I wake up well I know I’m gonna be the man that wakes up next to you, when I go out well I know I’m gonna be the man that goes next to you, I did think off something better later on.

Tracks

1. Freddie Mercury - I was born to love you.

2. Queen - It’s a hard life.

3. Stan Ridgway - Camouflage.

4. Bruce Dickinson - All the young dudes.

5. Original London Cast Recording - Grease - Summer nights.

6. Bon Jovi - Living on a prayer.

7. Anthrax - Got the time.

8. Pj & Duncan - Eternal love.

9. Michael Whitaker - Sailing home.

10. Lindisfarne - Old peculier feeling.

11. McCallum - Bigg bigg market.

12. Billy Fury - Halfway to paradise.

13. Louis Armstrong - What a wonderful world.

14. The Kinks - Lola.

15. The Proclaimers - I’m gonna be(500 miles).

End of Day Mix

Description

Well it isn't right now as I'm writing this, but this is one of my favorite mixes.  It starts and ends with J.D. Souther's recent release "I'll be here at closing time"... God that song gets to me because I so easily fall in love with waitresses and barristas.   Each CD version has unique character to it... horns on one, and acoustic on the other.  In between there is a Baez cover Dangling Conversation which is almost more a morning song, but just longs to put in bed with the other person.  Easy from now on is Becky Schlegel is written by Susanna Clark & Carlene Carter Routh and originally put out by Emmy Lou Harris.  If that isn't easy enough for you, then Give yourself to Love... here in the mix by the author the late Kate Wolf.  Originally written for a wedding, but it always brings me back to a mantra in life... "Give yourself to love, if love is what you are after"

Next a surreal "Hearts and Bones" by The Pines, sung by Benson Ramsey who has a great youthful Dylan sounding voice... again it's all about waking up, but you have to go to sleep before you can wake up.  Hideaway Girl just picks it up a little, without getting you too stirred up.  Home... a Karla Bonoff song but I bet you only think Bonnie Raitt when you hear it.  Those trains come and go, especially in the distance with the window open.

Holy Now... what's the end of the day without a story... brought to you by Peter Mayer about his youth.

There are three songs that tie the theme together and "I hope that I don't fall in love with you" by the master Tom Waits is one of them along with "It's too late to call it a night" by Amy Speace and the JD Souther pieces.    Of course I put a favorite Midnight and Mississippi song in there for fun too.

Tracks

1. I’ll be hare at closing time - J.D. Souther

2. Dangling conversation - Joan Baez

3. Easy from now on - Becky Schlegel

10. Miss the Mississippi and you - Rosanne Cash

Rockin’ around the living room

Description

Whole lotta love is one of Jimmy Page’s finest pieces of work I just love it, then we have Guns ‘n’ Roses with a classic when they were good, going back in time for My generation reminds me of my younger days. Deep Purple enough said Richie produces the most heard guitar riff ever. Iron Maiden just rock and this song is another from my youth, oh how I wish I could sing it like Bruce. Under Pressure is not really a rock classic as such but Bowies vocals on here just blow me away. Metallica next with another classic song that gets inside your head and you end up singing for hours. Living on a prayer is just one of a few great records on the album Slippery When Wet, Queensryche’s epic with great lyrics like “Visualize your dream. Record it in the present tense. Put it into a permanent form. If you persist in your efforts, you can achieve dream control” and from one epic to another this was probably Faith No More’s best song and we finish the mix with a bit of the master Eddie Van Halen and his rocking guitar solo.

My Mood music‏

Description

These songs mean a lot to me, Records enter the charts but some stick with you, these are ones that stay relevant to me. Some stick with you because they have a catchy tune, or a melody that just won’t go away, or the sentiment within the song meant something to me. These tracks are not in any particular order. And could easily name a dozen more, this is just a taste of my taste.

Alive and Kicking this track was the very first vinyl single I had ever bought, I never at that time owned headphones, so here I was lying downstairs on the kitchen floor speakers either side of my head blasting the song out at full volume, pissing off the neighbours no doubt.

Leaving me now, I was a huge fan of Mark King, still am, but this track was playing on radio 1 when I had first been dumped, I played it none stop for a week, as the one thing I believe in until this day, you never know what love is until you have lost it. I still feel sad when it first starts, but would I change things……never.

There must be an angel, easy my mother’s favourite song and every time I hear it, it reminds me of her, and it is an amazing song.

Who wants to live forever, I could name any number of Queen tracks as in my opinion Freddy Mercury was the greatest singer of his generation. But I first heard this song in the Movie Highlander and play this song at least once a week and is forever on my mp3 player.

Hotel California, again like Queen I could name any number of songs by this amazing group, but this one sticks with me, I have loved this track since I was but a boy and probably still love it the day I die.

Nothing compares 2 you, again a heartbreaker song, no break-up this time I just loved this song, written by Prince and always wondered what his version would have sounded like.

Father and son, this is the song that I sing in karaoke whilst drunk and not in this country and always good memories when I hear it, no matter where I am work, bus, night out, I have to sing along with it.

Just say yes, I am a massive soap fan and when a storyline grabs me it grabs me, this song played during a scene in Emmerdale and has like I stated in my opening, stuck with me and is an amazing song. And they have other amazing songs like Run, and Chasing cars to name just a couple.

Someone like you, wow what a talent, I was unaware of her until she sung this on TheBrits and she just blew me away, I have listened to 19 and 21 cover to cover many times since, and she will no doubt be around for a very long time what a voice.

Bedshaped, again another original band, and what a song and again I could name any number of songs by this group, Somewhere only we know, and everything changes, to name just 2, listen to them and tell me you haven’t loved them.

Africa, I loved this song and like Queen is a permanent track on my mp3 player, it just hits every sinew within my soul, as does Rosanna a great track for any mix tape.

The Boxer, These are my all-time favourite group and would travel anywhere in this world to see them play, this song is an amazing song about destitution and what you will do to survive and it just …… well listen to it.

Iris, City of Angels with Nicholas Cage and Meg Ryan, one of my all-time favourite films, this song just suited that movie so well, and it is also a permanent track on my mp3 player and just love the song.

In the Air Tonight, I was and still a fan of Genesis and therefore Mr Collins, this was an amazing song about a crime that had been spotted and explained during the song, it has hate for the person but the song just hits home, and has nothing to do with the gorilla playing the drums.

15, Bed of Roses, I am a fan of John Bon-jovi and love most of his songs, likes of Blaze of glory from Young Guns, and Always, but Bed of Roses is my favourite of them all, I listen to it a few times in a row when it hits on my player, it is long very long but it’s right.

This is my first Mix tape and the reasons behind each and every song, this won’t be my last mix tape and I enjoyed working through this and listening as I went.

It’s all about the lyrics

Description

When you listen to a song sometimes the lyrics stand out above all else for various reasons, they could make you think, they may shock or disturb you, some just make you smile, a few you can’t help but sing. Due to this I have put this mix together to show off these qualities and I think I have covered some of the best. If you disagree please leave a comment or better still put your mix together and submit it.

Leonard's lyrics are so clever throughout the song and who could forget “There was a time when you let me know, What's really going on below, But now you never show it to me, do you?” the sexual undertones of what at first glance seems to be a religious song, listen again and you hear a love story gone wrong.

David’s life on mars has some interesting outlooks on our world, and with lyrics like “Oh man! Look at those cavemen go, it’s the freakiest show, Take a look at the Lawman, Beating up the wrong guy, Oh man! Wonder if he'll ever know, He's in the best-selling show”, even 44 years after its original release the lyrics still hit home that we all live in a freak show where the lawyers rule.

Plan B tell us a story of a crazy fan who is stalking someone in the band, this highlight how obsessive fans can create issues and false claims against someone in the public eye.

Fish has a knack of writing clever lyrics highlighting issues of a personal and professional nature as well as highlighting what is bad in our world. Cleverly written riddles and puns inserted logically to an underwhelming musical background “Where beggars take cheques and children steal credit cards. From the pockets of wrecks that lie the road. I came to in my future and that was just yesterday,Unsure of my past that's a knot in my gut.”

Power ballad at its best, something to believe in has it all but the lyrics almost make you cry, “Their bullets took his best friend in Saigon, Our lawyers took his wife and kids, no regrets, In a time I don't remember, in a war he can't forget, He cried "Forgive me for what I've done there, Cause I never meant the things I did".

Coconut skins has a rhythm that makes you want to dance and the lyrics are a little off the wall but what made my ears prick up was “You can lie between her legs and go looking for, Tell her you're searching for her soul” what an image… also the chorus starts “you can sit on chimneys, Put some fire up your ass” another great image yes?

Hello has Amy Lee’s haunting voice with a piano backdrop delivering hard punchy lyrics like “Playground school bell rings again, Rain clouds come to play again, has no one told you she's not breathing? Hello, I'm your mind giving you someone to talk to, Hello” do a Google search find the true meaning then tell me it does not bring tears to your eyes.

Pulp’s I Spy has a very sinister side, the cheat who does not care and even hopes to be discovered let the lyrics speak for themselves “You see you should take me seriously, Very seriously indeed, "Cause I've been sleeping with your wife, For the past sixteen weeks, Smoking your cigarettes, drinking your brandy, Messing up the bed that you chose together, And in all that time I just wanted you, To come home unexpectedly one afternoon, And catch us at it in the front room” the arrogance and sinister nature of this is just brilliant you can’t help but love it.

The Eagles just produce good music but the lyrics in here make me think of the film ‘From Dusk till Dawn’ the clever descriptions and simple story will keep you humming for hours “And in the master's chambers, They gathered for the feast, They stab it with their steely knives, But they just can't kill the beast” genius?

Bill Withers this is one of them songs I forget about for years at a time but when I hear it I remember every lyric and just want to sing along, a simple but uplifting song that always makes me smile and think of my friends.

James Blunt has managed to write a full suicide note into a song, with these lyrics it’s hard not to get a lump in your throat “Remember us and all we used to be, I've seen you cry, I've seen you smile. I've watched you sleeping for a while.”

Finally Billy Joel gives us some beautiful poetry which just flows but throughout delivering little gems of genius making us think and wondering if there is more than two meanings being delivered here “And the waitress is practicing politics, As the businessmen slowly get stoned, Yes, they're sharing a drink they call loneliness, But it's better than drinkin' alone”

Tracks

1. Leonard Cohen – Hallelujah

2. David Bowie – Life on Mars

3. Plan B – She said

4. Fish – The Company

5. Poison – Something to believe in

6. Damien Rice – Coconut Skins

7. Evanescence – Hello

8. Pulp – I Spy

9. Eagles – Hotel California

10. Bill Withers – Lean On Me

11. James Blunt – Goodbye my Lover

12. Billy Joel – Piano Man

Grown Up

Description

I lost my virginity to the first track (album) and I think this is where my adulthood began and it’s one of the best opening tracks in my opinion to an album. You can call me Al is all about anonymity and for my first few years I felt like I was nobody lost in a massive world. Blind curve ends with the lyrics “I can't take any more, should we say goodbye, How can we justify? , They call us civilised!” such poetic genius cannot be ignored, fish has written better but this one just get me, I started to see what the world was really all about and this saddened me. Peter though lifted me up kept me pushing, it may be not easy but if you give up you fail. Bruce then reminds you that as a single person can’t change anything and that’s just the way it is. Later I was stuck in a relationship and needed to get out Damien helped me with elephant reminding me that some things do just need to die.

I went through a rough phase of my life and Moby’s simple lyrics just lift you up when your alone and down, with Sugar Mice it’s all about the lyrics, being a father isn’t easy but when you’re not with your children this hits home more than all other songs on the list, this also reminds me of the time I was talking to my daughter and I broke down in the middle of a packed pub as I was overrun with emotions of pain and regret, “Ain't no one in here that's left to blame but me” and “So if you want my address it's number one at the end of the bar” I was drinking a lot. I lost someone close to me Queensryche helped me take perspective of this and deal with the missing part of my life.

Still felling low and looking for help ‘Fix Me’ was what I needed and I found someone to lift me and help me out of the hole I was in. Small bump says it all really, no explanation needed. After me is the ultimate in love and sacrifice you could have in a relationship, it also makes you remember you don’t need paradise to have a good time, just make the most of what you have. I was starting to be content with my life a Wife, 4 Good (well sometimes) Children and a job that makes you feel like you do make a difference then we hit a recession, to be fair I have not been hit as bad as some but I think we all feel it, this song makes me think of all those greedy bankers and failing politicians.  I have finished with Terence as I would like you all to pray for those around you and appreciate what you have as there are many people worse off with no hope of escape. I escaped…

Bedroom Moves

Description

This is a soundtrack that takes you from the suggestion of getting it on, and the wondering if you know how to make love to me. The moves start with kissing all over, and the beat of the Ramones remind you that love has a rhythm. Marvin Gaye again to feel that deep rich voice remind you that this is healing. Really getting into the action now with Bad Company, the rhythm again gives a background beat to your bedroom moves, and then Paul Weller's haunting song, the raunchy of Madonna inside of me. For those that like something different it can be accommodated with Jimmy reminding us how difficult it can be to love someone like you. The Beatles remind us of the hoped outcome, Ian Dury for those that fell asleep and want more in the morning, and Captain and Tenille for the greedy people who want to do it more than once. This mix works well either played straight or played on random.

My Life's Journey

Description

Well it started when I was Born to be Wild, but very soon I was sent to school to learn my ABC and within no time I was all grown up and joined the Rat Race, earned some cash to party 'cos because Friday I'm in Love. Back to reality on Monday's though - I Don't Like Monday's!
After a while I met my special someone, got it bad and arranged a Nice Day for a White Wedding. Some years later I gave birth to by lovely daughter who remains the Sunshine of my Life.
I have continued working and playing, having the Time of my Life but feel that now I'm In the Backseat having reached the dilemma at work - Should I stay or should I Go? Either way I know I Will Survive and will always remain Young at Heart.

Wild Dancing

Description

This would be a compilation mix that I would play while driving or doing activities such as ironing, housework or gardening. I couldn't play this while not moving as it would physically make me move.  I have no issues with dancing in the car.

Children of the Night, this classic happy hardcore song of the late 90s makes me feel so wild, hair flying, body bouncing with the beat. Relax, an unusual choice for a first dance at my wedding, but it holds special memories for hubby and I so we chose it, thankfully I didn't marry in a wedding dress, so could really 'relax' into the music. Should I Stay or Should I Go Now, March 1991 this was re-released and I heard it on the radio, having been contemplating leaving my first husband, this song was stuck in my head, and gave me something to hang on to when I made the choice to go.  Now I just love the guitars. Bitch, if ever a song was written to describe me it’s this, I am everything all rolled into one.

Ramp, my eldest son took me to see Scooter live at the Metro Arena I always liked the music he played but this song makes me happy.  Eldest son has a thing for all German Dance music, I like most but nothing like Scooter.  I remember dancing to this amongst a 1000 teens and young under 25s, I felt ancient as I walked in and rolled out, but when I was there 2010 I was young again, wild again, high again. All Day and All of the Night, a great 60s song that has depth and rhythm as well as words that can be heard and understood. Ever Fallin in Love with Someone, a wild song, sing as loud as you want, and the words are all so similar it’s ok if you get them wrong. This song is so fun to dance to. Heartbreaker, the voice moves me, from the album In the Heat of the Night, this album is a classic, one of the only albums I have every track of on my iPod.  It covers every mood with a hard vocal of a woman’s point of view of relationships starting ending and being trapped. Mustang Sally, starting to slow things down now, lovely mood song to still dance too. This is where my energy level is dipping, but this song, Cream, moving into a slinky style of dancing here, this song is pure filth and I love it.
